East Africa is preparing to make history as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first time the prestigious tournament will be staged across three countries. Branded as “Pamoja AFCON 2027,” the event represents a major milestone for regional cooperation and football development on the continent.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that the tri-nation bid was selected to promote unity and expand the tournament’s footprint in emerging football markets. The word “Pamoja,” meaning “together” in Swahili, reflects the spirit of collaboration between the three East African nations.
A total of 24 national teams are expected to compete, with matches scheduled across major cities including Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam. Organizers have already begun extensive preparations, focusing on upgrading stadiums, improving transport infrastructure, and expanding hospitality services to meet international standards.
Officials from the three governments have emphasized that AFCON 2027 is not only a sporting event but also a catalyst for economic growth. The tournament is projected to boost tourism, create thousands of jobs, and accelerate infrastructure development across the region. Construction and renovation of stadiums and training facilities are already underway in key host cities.
CAF representatives have also conducted inspection visits to assess readiness and ensure compliance with tournament requirements. Early reports indicate strong progress, though continued investment will be needed to meet deadlines ahead of the opening match.
